You'll have to spend a little more money, but you'll be glad you did.ĭigital Pianos - Electronic Pianos - Synths &a. You should look around for a used Yamaha or Kawai from the late 90s. As your skills begin to "come back" over several months to a year, you may find yourself not being satisfied with the Samick. It seems as though you were serious about playing the piano at one point given your chosen major (even though you didn't follow through). I'm certainly no expert.ĮDIT #2 : I re-read your post. Have a tech check it out (as mentioned above) and if you like it, go for it!ĮDIT: I should clarify that my experience with "Samicks from that era" is mostly limited to my parent's piano. The Samicks from that era are decent pianos, but (in my experience) suffer from very poor tuning stability and a constant need for action re-regulation. The SG-172 is not even close to being in the same league as a Yamaha (even the new lower end models), but it should serve you and your family well until you can comfortably afford a better instrument. My parents have a 1986 Samick SG-172 in their house. Is $3,000 a good deal for this Samick? I have looked online and have seen the same piano sellingfor between $4500 - $6000. I have 3 sons (11 and 8 year old twins) that I'm sure will want to "play" (bang) so I wouldn't even consider the Yamaha until they are older but maybe one of them might also like to play so I would be much more comfortable with letting them play a $3,000 used piano instead of a new Yamaha. One day I would like to purchase a Yamaha grand but for now I'm thinking this might be a good choice. It is in great condition and has a very nice sound. It was basically a nice piece of furniture.

They purchased it new, have been the only owners, and have played very little. Neighbors are selling their 5'7" 1989 Samick for $3,000. I will be starting lessons again and have been searching for a used piano. So.I'm coming home (or at least if feels like I am). Fast forward 18 years later, married, 3 kids, and I have recently acknowledged that walking away is one of the major regrets of my life. I closed my piano on my way out to a bar one night and haven't played since.

I played as a child and young adult and went to University of Maryland as a performance major but then joined a sorority and began having too much fun.
